Auron is an ice and slash type damage dealer that boasts 3 different attack type resistances by 10% at base, and has a variety of attack moves with decent range that's good in high level contents. His arrival also comes with his signature weapon, the Shimmering Blade, further boosting his slash and ice attack by a significant amount. Potentially making him more f2p friendly since he's easier to build.

All of his counters only have a range of 1, but there are some minor variations between them. Counter (Auron) is arguably the best, since it's upgradeable through The Guide of the Story that also increases AGI. Flurry Counter is also upgradeable, and is a 2 hit counter attack, which can be good if it fits your mono ice team.

All of his main job skills are pretty good, and using it as a subjob gives Majestic Phoenix, a single skill that reduces both ATK and MAG, useful against bosses. His pugilist subjob gives strike attack skills, which won't benefit your weapon bonus, but comes with Shifting Strike to help get in range, then Spirit Breaker for ATK debuff. Soldier subjob is for more damaging abilities like Hazard Break and Hazard Spin that uses HP.

Upgrading him to EX upgrades his Infinite Possibilities to give DEF pentration, making him quite the tank buster if paired with his passive: One-Eyed Swordsman. The God-Killer upgrade and the new skill, Crouching Dragon, are nice additions, but not game changer enough if you're low on EX materials.

I have no ide why this guy gets so little love. He's slightly better than Tidus as a physical dps.
He one shots like 99.5% of the characters in the game, and he doesn't need self sacrifice to accomplish it.
From what I've seen, no one really knows how to build him properly.
I usually run him with Gilgamesh and either Yuna or King Mont. Equip Yuna with queen helena VC for the extra AGI on both Auron and Greg or otherwise, equip your 3rd character with Exorcists VC for 35% slash resist pen. If Im running Mont, obv I just run his card, but Exorcists is really good. I think Aigaion is a passable alternative.
Equip Greg with Fenrir esper and Odin VC (human killer and accuracy up) and , because Greg has no guaranteed hits, but it also allows Auron to use attacks other than banishing blade against evade units.
Equip Auron with Odin esper (for AGI, maneater, accuracy and slash up) and and Fenrir VC.
For Greg, give him soldier sub, (I never use him as a quicken bot, as he's possibly the best dps in the game).

For Auron, give him pugilist sub, as it gives him another damage type, and many, many of the units in the game are weak to fists. It also gives him breathing technique.
So lets go over the list:
Auron has the 1st/2nd best chain finisher in the game, with banishing blade (Duane's 2 hit attack amazing as well), he is the only non ranger phys dps who has a guaranteed hit (Cloud and Noctis in future)

He has 2 damage types, he can heal himself for thousands of hp, he has a good def buff, he can paralyze, he has 🔥 immunity, his attack maxes out somewhere around 1700, he has super high def pen potential. He can also be equipped with Golem esper instead (bad agi, but great def, and human killer), and equipped with +5 smart coat, so he ends up with around 55% magic attack resistance, and

30+ physical resistance (except pierce and fist). He also has pretty good range and AOE options. Total no brainer for S tier. Tidus has no guaranteed hits, no chain finisher, no healing, bad AOE and bad range, and is super weak to magic even with a +5 smart coat.

Tidus won't hit as hard as Auron for sure, but it's his flexibility with speed buffs/debuffs and being able to substitute as a budget phys tank for newer players puts him at S. But you're right, Auron does a better job at being a main damage dealer than a lot of other units to be at S.
BTW for anyone curious, Auron's agility can get up to 98 with Pod 153, bells, Odin esper, and Fenrir VC. Could get it higher with Helena VC though I suppose.
Auron is generally an underrated unit I think. Def deserves his spot in the 2S tier, so good on whoever does this ranking.

I meant Helena VC on a mage, not on Auron.
Auron best vision card is Exorcists, I think. Fenrir is nice for the +4 agi, actually will lots of Agi buffs, you can get his agi up to about 97, but I prefer to run him as a one shotter with exorcists and full attack boost, then equip fenrir on someone else to boost his attack and mag resist by a lot. Odin vc on another unit to boost all his accuracy.
Also the triple slash attack on the exorcists card has a nice benefit of reducing enemy evasion.

You don't need to boost his accuracy with the exorcist vc because triple attack reduces evasion. He also has banishing blade which is a 2-hit guaranteed attack. I'd put him with a tank running fenrir vc and a unit like br Helena with her 15% agi up vc.

The BR Helena VC is a great idea, yeah, I've since moved away from exorcist VC on him, I use Odin instead, and put Fenrir on Gilgamesh. Odin esper on Auron and Fenrir esper on Greg. BRH would be a spectacular addition to the team, and I've got her VC almost maxed, but I run King Mont with them instead as I don't have BRH on this account yet.

There's also the problem of banishing blade being only a 2 range attack, so he's going to use plenty of other attacks before he can get in range to use it. So yes, the Odin VC with accuracy up is a good idea, I use it more so for Greg than Auron anyway because Greg has no guaranteed hits, and I want to leverage Greg's AOE as much as possible.
Got a team of Auron, Gilgamesh, and Yuna, all ex'd. Looking like a real Yuna buster team, Yunas just there to keep the other 2 alive, might even replace her with EX Ayaka one day, but we'll see.
