Overview

Celes is a limited-time unit from FFVI collaboration event, a MAG-based water element tank with a one-of-a-kind ability that can shut down a lot of mages.

As a tank, aside from lack of death-defying ability, she has close to a gold standard in terms of defensive tools (good base resistances, passive hate, protect+shell) plus some extra unit attack resist and good LB, but she can also deal good damage since she has mid to high multipliers and wide-area attacks. They are expensive AP-wise, but she starts with half AP in battle and she can potentially gain some through her unique buff.

What separates her from other tanks is her Runic + skill. Not only does it give her protect and shell on cast, but it can also nullify reflectable magic attacks that hit her and gives her a portion of the AP/TP used from the attack. Area attacks will not even hit other targets as long as Celes with the buff active is also affected. A single cast can absorb 2 magic attacks, but she gets to use it twice per battle as her job level 19 upgrade.

It's a hard counter to mages that don't have non-reflectable magic attacks outside of their LB. In auto-battle, the enemy AI will simply keep attacking. This ultimately makes the ability very strong since it can nullify an attack and potentially protect your team, but it also makes Celes stronger by giving her TP/AP.

Why is she water instead of ice? In FF6 she naturally learned all the ice spells, so you'd think she go that route.

Water make no sense. Celes was Frigid as ice. She was an ice specialist. Stop trying to rewrite history.

Where in the FF6 script was she an "ice specialist" She starts out with ice, yes but that's about it and it's only to give elemental balance since terra already has access to fire at that point in the game. Celes is not "like ice" her emotions and inner turmoil are more like water.

In WOTV, think of the elements as Group names example Group A=Fire, Group B=Ice. Meaning the elements has nothing to do with the unit’s skills. It is a just a grouping name.

And each group has to have a balanced set of characters: tanks, dps, support. This is why Barret who fires a laser is ICE or Noctis whose name is literally related to darkness is EARTH.

Already units are coming out in jp with the cancel runic skill. Not sure how long she will be viable. I bet a 100 cost exclusive gb unit comes out in the near future with the ability to also use runic or cancel it out. Sold on Alstoria though.

Even without Runic, she's still a very capable tank, works well with Alstoria, and benefits from Water's selection of great VCs.

exactly that makes her SS, the ability to nullify for her and the whole team a nuke from helena or ranan is invaluable, and when you have a unit that defines the meta like alstoria, protecting him is very useful, it's basically a charlotte-cloud situation, but better
