Yeah Sword Guard is one of the best reaction abilities at this point. It can be activated against magical attack as well.

Is activation on a magic attack based on faith?

According to the official, Faith decides the activation of reaction ability against magic damage. So it should be but I've not tested it yet.

Yes, based on my experience with 97 Bravery/33 Faith Whisper. Spam Guards Physical, eats more magic to the face. Haven't found her ideal faith to proc frequently w/out taking an absurd hit. As low faith lowers magic damage all around.
